First published in 1898, The Echo began as a literary journal and newsletter for students of the Eastern State Normal School, a teachers’ college founded in Castine, Maine, on the campus of what is today Maine Maritime Academy. The original publication included works of poetry, travel and nature writing, personal and academic essays, photography, and reflections on life in the Penobscot Bay region.

Now back in a new online format after more than a century, The Echo aims to continue a long tradition of writing about life in coastal Maine and beyond. In doing so, we hope that the content of this journal will, like an echo, allow us to hear each of our voices anew, reflected and transformed by our encounters with the world around us.
